The major scope of this work is very system-oriented and deals with porting and reimplementing existing Java libraries into C++ including the low-level optimization of existing data structures and evaluation strategies. Central issues are:

• Efficient top-k processing of XPath-style queries
• Designing highly specialized index structures for XML data incl. index compression
• Multithreaded query processing
• Dynamic query expansion
• Index access caching & scheduling

Most important preconditions are a fast startup and excellent programming skills in Java and C++. Duration of the thesis would preferably be no longer than 6 months. All the core issues are well specified.
